Having a stunning patio is desirable for many Melburnians. However, that’s provided it’s in good condition.

It might be time to consider getting advice from an experienced patio and pergola builder if your current patio is looking worse for wear. Designing and building a modern patio with high-end timber decking and overhead coverage could be right for you and your family.

Here are some signs that you need a new patio.

An outdated design

It’s all very well to want to spend lots of time in your backyard, soaking up the sunshine or eating a meal in winter under the warm embrace of an outdoor heater.

Of course, an outdated patio design hardly leaves much to the imagination. If you’re living in an older property, you might have repainted the walls and replaced 1970s-style carpet – but don’t forget about your outdoor spaces!

Homeowners often request clean lines, natural materials such as timber and a minimalist layout for their patios in order to achieve a sleek, modern vibe.

Concrete in poor condition

Switching to a timber patio could be a wise move if your current patio is an unsightly concrete affair.

Concrete can suffer from efflorescence, which is particularly unappealing if it’s a coloured variety.

This occurs when moisture in the concrete carries salts, such as calcium, to the surface. Melbourne’s rain can stimulate this activity, too.

The result is a white, chalk-like appearance, which hardly makes for an aesthetically pleasing outdoor area. The darker the concrete, the more likely it is to show up.

There are a number of ways to remove it, from using chemical solutions to water blasting the area. Alternatively, investing in a timber deck that will require polishing every six to 12 months could be a better alternative, particularly if you want a more expansive patio that’s built with your home’s existing design in mind.
