Project Overview
SUNROOM & STOREROOM EXTENSION IN MELBOURNE
There’s nothing worse than having only a small verandah out the back, and an old gazebo with some café blinds, to provide shelter for your old rocking chair and barbeque gear. Enter Custom Outdoor Living with a sharp pencil, a bucket full of potential design ideas, and a licence to build something new and fabulous just for you!
Extending this existing double-storey dwelling to incorporate a new sunroom and storeroom, at the rear, resulted in expanded entertainment space, glorious areas for the children to play, and a feeling of grandeur all in one. Featuring 4 overhead skylights, the new sunroom has stacker doors to the side and rear, and tiled floor areas to ensure easy cleaning and a reduction in the instance of trekking muddy feet into the rest of the home as a whole. Rendered polystyrene foam cladding was used on the exterior walls of this 45.96m2 sunroom extension in Melbourne.
The project soon got underway, starting with the removal of the existing verandah, a gazebo that was getting well-past its use by date, and a concrete paved area in the backyard abutting an easement to the boundary fence. Skinny access machinery was brought in through a width-restricted siding to gut the rear garden, and jackhammers took care of the multitude of tired old concrete slabs.
With our capacity to design, take care of all permit applications and then build your home extension, there are no unnecessary delays when you engage the expertise of Custom Outdoor Living as a highly-respected Melbourne Extension Specialist.
Custom Outdoor Living tailor the use of timber frameworks, as the flexibility to design a best-fit extension relies on builder expertise to meld new structural supports with the existing residence. The frame is like a skeleton and all of the pieces need to be carefully intertwined. This is because, often, when homes are extended, the building process can expose anomalies in the original build, and Custom Outdoor Living’s experience always comes to the fore in ensuring that the new sectors seamlessly blend with the old.
In this house extension in Wantirna South, the build proceeded very smoothly. Matching Klip Lock roofing was added in zinc, with customised Woodland Grey flashings. Our electrical team added dimmer down lights, exterior coach lights and spotlights, a central feature pendant light in the centre of the room, and also installed an energy-efficient split system air conditioner to weather all seasons. A bulkhead was added with decorative plaster detail to meld with the main house’s similar styling, and a tiled floor and double glazing completed the look with a terracotta paint applied to give the sunroom space a Mediterranean feel. Our owners chose custom cabinetry, insulated walls, and included a storeroom that is there on the outside, but seemingly semi-invisible from the inside. By utilising our decades of design experience, our clients truly benefited from a pool of ideas that they might never have otherwise considered.
We consulted with the owners to affect a decision to add French doors and two sets of stacker doors so that the use of the room could be flexible – as a closed space when the weather was unfavourable, with the capacity to evolve into an instant alfresco outdoor living area in the warmer months – perfect for airflow, entertaining, easy access from three sides and light-filled to the max. Constructed from Meranti timber, the windows are colonial in style. The lightness of the exterior building’s render colour blends perfectly with the existing residence and makes the whole home’s structure feel even more spacious and inviting.
And so…. The end result of this Sunroom Extension in Melbourne’s Wantirna South makes perfect sense. Where the house once had a small verandah with café blinds, it now has a new room with a view, a store for the odd cubic metre or two, and everything has its place in a whole world of extra space.
