SENSATIONAL SUNROOM EXTENSION IN THE BASIN, MELBOURNE

We were excited to see the demise of a very ugly duckling verandah covered with a tacked on timber roofline, covered with tired old polycarbonate corrugated sheets.  We could not wait to start this project – and neither could the owners of this new Sunroom Extension in The Basin.

Set in a court location, the property fans out in width at the rear.  This allowed good access through the carport and space to really construct an incredible game-changer.  The room now features gorgeous Baltic Pine floorboards (laid over a yellow tongue solid baseline), exposed timber beams and rafters, meranti colonial windows and doors, a fabulous stone fire wall and hearth with a Coonara wood heater to add cosy warmth, and a split system to keep things on the down-low when the summer hits.  Whilst the room that we designed, at Custom Outdoor Living, is quite big and open, it has a country charm about it with pine wood panelling and dado rails on some walls, a corner window seat with hidden storage, four skylights, and 2 pedestrian exit doors to the backyard and carport siding.  The original brick home had aluminium sliders which we replaced with lovely French doors.  And now, the walk from the original family and meals section into the new sunroom is just gorgeous.  It just works!

True to our usual flair in producing customised house extension designs, we scrutinised and changed the wood heater’s flue shaping, so that the base unit could sit perfectly central.  We also had to negotiate around local council environmental, landscape and development overlays.  You could be forgiven for thinking you are entering a log cabin now.

We protected the existing landscaping features, plants and character, as much as possible, to ensure the private seclusion of the yard continued to be maximised.  We always need to perform demolition works to some degree, when fashioning a sunroom addition, but we’re careful to leave every property with minimal exterior disruption, so that, when we leave at tools down the owners can immediately focus on enjoying their brand-new space.
