This New Double Carport in Balwyn North replaced an aging single carport that was cohesively joined under the home’s main roofline, a large but plain ceramic tile porch, and some rugged and broken concrete driveway surfaces.  It certainly was time for a major makeover.

The red brick home featured mature hedged gardens, fretwork, decorative gable timberwork, a terracotta tile roof and a classic solid brick step entry to the front door.  At first glance, the project appeared simple enough, however, the existing carport needed to be completely demolished, whilst safely and sympathetically also removing aspects of the box hedge garden, the front verandah, the side fence, the solid steps, the brick letterbox, and the original concrete drive.  Care was taken to only disturb the essential areas onsite, whilst nurturing and respecting the nextdoor neighbour’s garden beds as well.

The old fretwork and carport posts were completely removed from the house, we freshened up the main home’s gable timbers, and realigned the roof valleys, the gutters, downpipes, and the tile roof to structure the new double carport design. Everything about this project was tailor-made!

The customised design included an extra-wide lintel to span the two-car space, concrete footings, and timber supports, framing and roof trusses that were woven into the existing roofline – using our signature skills when it comes to making extension additions for our clients across Melbourne. The trick is to make everything look natural. The new carport has now replaced most of the original verandah, it spans to the boundary and the back gate, and features a sleek new exposed aggregate surface that curves all the way to the street crossover.

The carport has been plaster-lined, there are LED downlights for added security, new slate steps to a neat little porch, and easy-care lawns to replace previous garden areas. And where natural light was highly restricted to the main living room, there is now a heightened sense of openness in the main home as well. It’s also important to note that, whilst the rear of the home cannot be seen from the street, our carport design cohesively aligns with the alfresco pergola shape that can be found in the backyard.
