Most homes nowadays come with either the standard one or two car garage, but is that really the best option for you? At first thought you may think the obvious answer would be a garage, but for those in Melbourne looking to spend a little less money a carport may be the right choice for you.

Two of the biggest factors you are going to want to consider when making the choice between a carport or a garage are your location and the climate of the area in which you live. Both carports and garages have their pros and cons so here is a little information to help make your decision a little bit easier.

Carports

A typical carport consists of a simple roof structure supported by a few beams or posts. They are often found in apartment complexes and other close unit housing facilities. They allow for easy entry and exit and don’t require much if any maintenance or up keep.

Carports are great for climates that don’t see a wide range of extreme weather like heavy snows or rainfalls. They are also made available in a kit so you can quickly build it over the course of a day or two.

A major advantage of a carport for those building their own homes is the ease on city regulations and restrictions versus those of a garage. Since carports are not liveable structures, it means that more often than not, depending on where you live, it’s easier to have them builtin comparison to a garage.

The downsides to carports are that they are typically able to only fit one vehicle and don’t offer much if any storage space for items related to vehicle maintenance, storage of overflow items from your home, or provide ample space to do car repairs.

Garages

It seems that most houses have a garage and it is not difficult to see why. Garages offer much more shelter and protection and are not only for vehicle storage but also a wide range of other things from small tools to air compressors and other machines.

For most, a garage is much more than a simple storage place. Modern garages can range from a storage place for tool and items not able to be stored in your home to an extra living space in many cases.

They offer a significantly greater amount of protection not only from the natural elements but also from animals and thieves, whereas a carport is only protected from the top and open on all four sides.

When it comes to cost the fact of the matter is that even the most basic garage is going to cost you more than a carport. It all comes down to where you live and if the extra cost of having a garage is worth it to you.

As mentioned before depending on where you live the guidelines for construction might prove to be a challenge for those preferring to build a garage instead of a carport.

Carports and garages both have their pros and cons so make sure you take a good look at all factors before deciding which is best for you.
