Project Overview
Beaumaris is but a hop, step and jump from the beach, so it’s natural to want to entertain outdoors and smell the sea breeze.
The owners of this gorgeous Edwardian home already had a decking area outside the back door, but it lacked coverage from the elements.
And certain features of its original curved design didn’t allow the family to maximise its space potential.
They wanted to be able to prepare meals, make use of the outdoor dining setting, and have an outdoor lounge ensemble to curl up in and watch the leaves fall from the surrounding trees.

It was relatively easy to understand their brief. The owners didn’t want to change the feel of their existing, uncovered alfresco area.
Rather, they wanted to enhance its elegance and functionality, without any excessive redesigning and over-expenditure.
So, our Designer, Kaaren Jukes, embarked on giving them a design that was sympathetic to the original style and architecture of the home, and one which blended perfectly with what they already had.

The entry doors, to the actual home itself, were retained, and the new roofline was established overhead, and lined with white HardieGrooveTM panelling.
This opened-up the area in a subtle way, to complement the space, without it looking like a new addition to the original home.
The new merbau decking was squared off and fitted with two sets of steps that now flow onto the lawn area with ease.
We provided every required trade to increase the area with a simple and complete design, that soon made the landing more roomy, so they could enjoy the view, without feeling enclosed.
The new outdoor kitchen was fitted with a generous wine fridge, a custom-made set of cabinetry, a rangehood, a covered barbeque unit, and a separate wok burner, so that preparing meals, storing utensils and refrigeration were all within easy reach.

A few challenges presented themselves in achieving Council approval for the regulation, fire-rated boundary wall and the reworking of the decking shape.
But these were soon overcome because of our experience in being able to negotiate directly for the client.
And because we can adapt the designs, on-the-fly, and amend anything contentious throughout the process – from conception to completion.
New LED downlights were fitted for energy efficiency, and now the summer breeze and winter rains can be held more at bay, allowing the owners to enjoy so much more about their home and their day.
