Aspendale Alfresco Design

This 4-bedroom Aspendale home was built in 2009 on an 800m2 block. Its ample property depth was crying out for development to maximise its entertainer’s paradise dimensions.
The owners came to Matt Goodie, Custom Outdoor Living’s Managing Director, with hopes to add an all-weather alfresco, a spa and pool – and it didn’t take long before the build began.

The project was staged to build the modern / contemporary alfresco at the rear of the home first. Monument coloured Duragroove wall cladding solidified the unified look of the addition, which included an outdoor dining kitchen space, a powder room and shower, and an overall design that would seamlessly look as though it had always been there.

With the roofing, framework and structure initially put in-place, the specialist task of installing the spa and pool was handed over.

Once the pool was completed, we, at Custom Outdoor Living, were able to then step back in and continue adding to the natural flow of the overall design.
New landscaping was integrated, bringing the decking and the exit from the alfresco together, so that the fusion of the whole backyard space became a sweeping resort-style area, as opposed to the rambling long section of backyard land that preceded it.

In the alfresco itself, two large skylights were installed to allow natural light to still flood the interior of the home, and outdoor strip heating and air-circulating fans were positioned to cater for temperatures low or high.

Motorised, built-in mesh screens were commissioned to also enabled security, privacy and protection from blistering heat or inclement weather.

The fully-functional outdoor barbeque / kitchen (complete with a fire-rated rear wall) is easily accessed from the main kitchen, and the added WC and shower means that the owners’ family and friends can while away a day, a night or a party, without needing to traipse through the house with soggy feet.

A clever element of the design was the inclusion of a feature wall at the far end of the pool. This not only adds an element of class, but it also hides a massive water tank, the pool’s extensive plumbing network, and some spare yard space. The wall also creates a noise block from the nearby Nepean Highway.

With the pool completed, we were able to draw the alfresco’ spotted gum decking out, to surround the pool, install a glass pool fence and add some pool coping to trim the area beautifully.

One of Custom Outdoor Living’s great strengths is in working with home-owners and their other contractors (such as the pool builders) so that works are done on a schedule that best suits the project.

In this case, too, the owners completed the fence painting and other tasks that they felt they could handle personally. And now this oasis of entertaining is a heavenly haven for all to enjoy – and Rebecca and Blair are delighted:
